HunyuanImage 3.0 Alternatives After the China-Only Login Wall

Last Updated: 2026-07-30 02:52:04

Tencent's official HunyuanImage 3.0 playground moved behind China's app ecosystem in late July 2026: Google and Outlook sign-in are gone, and community reports say account verification now demands a Chinese phone number. The weights themselves are still free to download — so before you switch models, it's worth being precise about what you lost.

What actually got locked (and what didn't)

The lockout affects Tencent's hosted HunyuanImage 3.0 service, not the model itself. On July 27, 2026, users on r/StableDiffusion reported that the official HunyuanImage 3.0 Instruct demo — previously accessible with a Google or Outlook email — started requiring Chinese account verification.

"Now they're requiring a Chinese phone number to verify your account before you can use it at all. So basically anyone outside China is locked out." — r/StableDiffusion, July 27, 2026

We checked the official portal (hunyuan.tencent.com, which redirects to Tencent's Hy AI Studio) on July 30, 2026. The sign-in modal now offers exactly three options: WeChat QR code, QQ, or an email verification code. The Google and Outlook sign-in options are gone.

What is not locked, verified the same day:

  • The open weights. tencent/HunyuanImage-3.0 on Hugging Face is still public and non-gated, with 12,869 downloads as of July 30 and a last update on January 28, 2026.
  • The code. The official GitHub repository remains open, including local inference scripts.
  • Third-party hosted APIs. Providers running the open weights, such as fal, still serve the model without any Tencent account.

Your three realistic paths after the lockout

Losing the official demo leaves HunyuanImage 3.0 users with three options: run the open weights locally, pay a third-party host for the same model, or switch models entirely. The right one depends on your hardware and volume.

Run the open weights locally

HunyuanImage 3.0 is an 80B-parameter Mixture-of-Experts model (about 13B active per token), and the full checkpoint needs roughly 170 GB of disk and at least three 80 GB GPUs; the official repo recommends four. That is A100/H100 territory, not a desktop RTX build. If you already rent multi-GPU nodes, this is the only path that keeps the exact model without depending on any provider's access policy.

Keep Hunyuan through a third-party hosted API

fal serves HunyuanImage 3.0 Instruct at $0.09 per megapixel — about $0.094 for a 1024×1024 image (price checked July 30, 2026). It needs no Chinese phone number and no Tencent account. The trade-off: you are now dependent on one host's continued access to a model whose official access rules changed abruptly once already.

Switch to a different model

If you used HunyuanImage 3.0 mainly for its text rendering and prompt adherence rather than its specific look, current-generation alternatives cover that ground, several at a lower per-image price than hosted Hunyuan. That claim is testable, so we tested it.

We tested 3 alternatives on Hunyuan's home turf: text rendering

We made in-image text the test criterion — it is the capability the official HunyuanImage 3.0 repo leads with — and gave three hosted alternatives the same text-heavy prompt: a vintage night-market poster with the headline "RIVERSIDE NIGHT MARKET", the subtitle "Open Fridays 6-11 PM", and incidental stall signage. One generation per model through the AIReiter API on July 30, 2026, all on default settings, no reference images, no aspect-ratio request, no rerolls. This is a spot check, not a benchmark.

Same text-rendering prompt across Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2, and Seedream 5.0 Pro, side by side

All three rendered the headline and the subtitle correctly on the first attempt. The differences showed up in the small stall signs:

  • Seedream 5.0 Pro produced the cleanest secondary signage ("FRESH NOODLES", "GRILLED SKEWERS", "STEAMED BUNS"), with one garbled corner label ("FRUIT RINKS").
  • GPT Image 2 kept its signs readable ("BBQ SKEWERS", "PAD THAI", "SPRING ROLLS") but truncated one board to "TH NOODLES".
  • Nano Banana Pro handled most signs ("PAD THAI", "SATAY") and was the only one to default to a 16:9 poster layout, with one garbled sign ("4IATIO").

The three generations cost $0.14 total ($0.07 + $0.02 + $0.05). In this single-poster test, all three rendered both headline lines correctly; fine-print signage still garbled occasionally.

HunyuanImage 3.0 alternatives compared: pricing and licensing

Price is where the alternatives separate, so each number below was checked against the provider's live pricing page on July 30, 2026. "1K" means the provider's ~1024px tier.

Seedream 5.0 Pro$0.07 (2K $0.14, +$0.005 per reference image)Closed, API onlyCleanest signage overall

Two licensing details matter if you build on the open-weights options. Hunyuan's Community License requires attribution to Tencent and separate authorization once your product passes 100 million monthly active users. Qwen Image ships under Apache-2.0, with no revenue threshold and no MAU threshold.

Which alternative should you pick?

For most former HunyuanImage 3.0 users, the decision comes down to what you were using it for. Based on our test and the verified pricing above:

  • Text-heavy production work (posters, packaging, UI mockups): Seedream 5.0 Pro: the cleanest signage in our test, plus reference-image support at $0.005 each.
  • Cheapest way to keep shipping: GPT Image 2 at $0.02 per 1K image, one-fifth the price of hosted Hunyuan, and its text held up at headline size.
  • Wide-format layouts: Nano Banana Pro was the only model in our test to default to a 16:9 poster composition.
  • You specifically need Hunyuan's output: fal's hosted endpoint at $0.09/MP, or the open weights if you have 3-4 × 80 GB GPUs.
  • Open weights with a clean license: Qwen Image under Apache-2.0.

The unresolved trade-off: the only lockout-proof option, the open weights, needs data-center GPUs that most teams don't rent. Keep your prompts portable; hosted access policies can change overnight, as this episode showed. Our three-model comparison cost $0.14 and took us about 15 minutes to run.

FAQ

Does HunyuanImage 3.0 require a Chinese phone number now?

The official hosted demo does, per community reports from July 27, 2026. Our July 30 check confirmed the sign-in modal now only offers WeChat, QQ, and email-code login, with Google and Outlook options removed. The downloadable weights have no such requirement.

Can I still download the HunyuanImage 3.0 weights?

Yes. The Hugging Face repository tencent/HunyuanImage-3.0 was public and non-gated as of July 30, 2026. Running them locally requires roughly 170 GB of disk and at least three 80 GB GPUs.

Is HunyuanImage 3.0 free to use?

The weights are free under the Tencent Community License (attribution required, separate authorization above 100M MAU). Hosted access is not: fal charges $0.09 per megapixel, about $0.094 per 1024×1024 image.

What is the cheapest hosted alternative to HunyuanImage 3.0?

GPT Image 2 at $0.02 per 1K image was the cheapest option we verified (July 30, 2026), roughly one-fifth of hosted Hunyuan's price. Qwen Image may be cheaper through some hosts, but we did not verify its pricing or test it.
