Krea 3 vs Nano Banana: Default to 2.1, Use Krea for Edit Chains

Last Updated: 2026-10-21 05:30:50

On October 20, Artificial Analysis put Krea 3 Ultra at 1151 Elo on its image-editing leaderboard, one point behind Nano Banana 2.1 at 1152. For most API workloads, Nano Banana 2.1 is still the better default: it costs less per 2K edit and edged ahead in an independent blind test. The exception is a chain of small edits on one approved image, where Krea 3 repainted far less than Nano Banana Pro in a published 10-edit drift test.

Which Krea 3 tied Nano Banana 2.1 on the leaderboard

Only Krea 3 Ultra, the slowest and most expensive Krea 3 mode, tied Nano Banana 2.1. Krea 3 Fast, the default API mode, sits at 1125 Elo and rank #11, level with the older Nano Banana 2 (1124). Nano Banana Pro is further down at 1106, rank #16.

Artificial Analysis image editing leaderboard showing Nano Banana 2.1 at 1152 and Krea 3 Ultra at 1151 Elo

Overlapping confidence intervals (±13 to ±14) put Nano Banana 2.1, MAI-Image-2.6 and Krea 3 Ultra in the same rank range of 3–6: a three-way tie.

The mode matters because the three Krea 3 modes are different products, per Krea's API documentation:

Krea 3 modeAA editing EloOutputRegional editAccessTime per job
fast (default)1125 (#11)1K or 2KYesEvery API workspaceSeconds
highNot ranked1K or 2KYesEvery API workspaceSlower than fast
ultra1151 (#5)2K onlyNoMax plan or aboveUp to ~10 minutes

Per the docs, Ultra generates several candidates, reviews them against your prompt, and returns the best one. It also drops regional_edit, the setting that keeps everything outside the edit pixel-exact. The mode that matches Nano Banana 2.1 on quality is not the mode built for low-drift edits.

Three independent tests, three different answers

The three independent tests cited here measure different things, so none alone settles the comparison:

Edit quality: Nano Banana 2.1 is slightly ahead

On single edits, Nano Banana 2.1 holds a small lead. In Voyager's blind test it won 57% of pairwise preferences against Krea 3's 42% and beat Krea 3's quality setting 208 to 157. On Artificial Analysis the gap is one Elo point, inside the margin.

Krea's own breakdown of the AA categories puts Ultra at #2 in Animation & Gaming and #4 in Retail and in Marketing & Advertising. For product and ad work, Krea 3 Ultra is near the top but not first.

Preservation across repeated edits: where Krea 3 pulls away

The drift test cited here pits Krea 3 against Nano Banana Pro, not 2.1. The Hype ran ten sequential edits on one 2048×2048 photo through Krea's API, without masks: Krea 3 changed 3.8% of the frame per edit and 30.7% in total, Pro 12.6% and 74.2%. By edit 10, Pro's fog had turned purple.

"for a chain of edits on one image, krea 3 keeps the photo and nano banana pro slowly repaints it." — Yana Lialuke, The Hype, test run October 15, 2026

The same test found a weakness: people Krea 3 added "look like stone statues," while Pro's looked human.

Krea's regional_edit, documented as "the safe way to chain edits," works in fast and high only.

What a Krea 3 edit costs once references are billed

Krea 3's headline price is $0.06 per 2K image. An edit needs at least one input image, and Krea bills each reference on top: +$0.02 for a 1K reference, +$0.07 for a 2K reference, +$0.02 for high thinking and +$0.20 for ultra.

Krea 3 API pricing table: $0.03 at 1K, $0.06 at 2K, plus reference image and thinking mode surcharges

Nano Banana 2.1 bills per token. A 2K output costs $0.0504 on Google's Gemini API pricing page, and input images are charged at $1.50 per million tokens, a fraction of a cent per reference. Nano Banana Pro costs $0.134 per 2K image plus $0.0011 per input image.

Nano Banana 2.1~$0.05~$0.05~$0.05
Nano Banana Pro~$0.135~$0.135~$0.138

At 10,000 edits a month with one 1K reference, Krea 3 Fast costs about $800 and Nano Banana 2.1 about $504 plus input tokens, or roughly $252 through Gemini's Batch API at half price. Krea 3 Fast undercuts Nano Banana Pro until you send several 2K references.

Krea says about 1MP per reference is enough for most edits, so downscaled 1K references keep Krea 3 Fast near $0.08.

Is Krea 3 faster than Nano Banana 2.1

Independent tests do not show Krea 3 beating Nano Banana 2.1 on speed. Krea's "under 8 seconds" figure is the median on Krea's own platform from September 24 to October 1, compared against Nano Banana 2 (27s) and Nano Banana Pro (33s), not 2.1.

Voyager also found Nano Banana 2.1 had the tightest spread between median and slowest 10% of any model tested (11.7s vs 13.1s). For a pipeline with timeouts, that consistency matters as much as the median.

Krea 3 vs Nano Banana Pro

Against Nano Banana Pro, Krea 3 is the stronger choice for most editing. Voyager scored them level at 181 to 180, but Pro trails even Krea 3 Fast on AA (1106 vs 1125), costs $0.135 vs $0.08 per 2K edit, and drifted more than twice as much. Pro's remaining edges are 4K output ($0.24 per image) and more convincing people.

FAQ

Is Krea 3 better than Nano Banana 2.1?

Not on overall quality: Ultra ties 2.1 on Artificial Analysis, and 2.1 won Voyager's blind head-to-head 208 to 157. Krea 3's edge is low drift over repeated edits, so far measured only against Pro.

Can Krea 3 generate images from text?

Yes. Krea's API treats a request without image_urls as text-to-image; a text-only Ultra request runs and bills as fast.

Which is cheaper once reference images are included?

Nano Banana 2.1, at about $0.05 per 2K edit plus a fraction of a cent per reference. Krea 3 Fast costs $0.08 to $0.13 with one reference.

How many reference images do Krea 3 and Nano Banana 2.1 accept?

Krea 3 accepts up to 8 through the API (four or fewer for full detail). Nano Banana 2.1 accepts up to 14.

Does Krea 3 support 4K output?

No. Krea 3 outputs 1K or 2K; Nano Banana 2.1 and Pro both output 4K.
